The Blue Bead’s Journey from İzmir – Puppet Theatre Activity

As part of our eTwinning project, our students prepared and performed a short puppet theatre activity to introduce an important symbol of Turkish culture: the nazar bead, also known as the blue bead.

The activity was called “The Blue Bead’s Journey from İzmir.” In the story, a visitor comes to a traditional glass workshop in Nazarköy, İzmir, where a glass master introduces the handmade nazar bead. Through the dialogue between the visitor, the glass master and the blue bead, students explained that the nazar bead is not only a decoration, but also a symbol of good wishes, friendship, protection and Turkish glass art.

For the performance, students prepared simple but effective puppets using printed characters and wooden sticks. They designed a glass master, a visitor and a blue bead puppet. The activity helped students improve their creativity, speaking skills and cultural awareness while learning how to present their own culture in English.

This puppet theatre was both enjoyable and meaningful. It enabled our students to share a traditional Turkish symbol with their project partners and to show that even a small blue bead can carry a big message of friendship.

From Türkiye to our friends: friendship and good wishes travel around the world!
