CARNIVAL IN GREECE
🎭 Welcome to "Apokries": The Magic of Carnival in Greece! ✨
If you love dressing up, eating delicious food, and dancing in the streets, then you would love "Apokries"—which is what we call Carnival in Greece!
The word Apokries literally means "saying goodbye to meat," because it is the festive season right before a long period of fasting leading up to Easter. It is one of the most joyful times of the year, filled with colours, laughter, and ancient traditions.
🏛️ Ancient Roots & Fun Traditions
Did you know that Greek Carnival has roots that are thousands of years old? It connects back to ancient Greece and the festivals honoring Dionysus, the ancient god of wine, fun, and theatre! Today, it lasts for three exciting weeks and is packed with cool customs like:
🍖 Tsiknopempti (Smoky Thursday): On this day, the whole country fills with the smell of grilled meat! Families and schools set up grills outdoors, play loud music, and feast together.
🎨 Huge Parades: Cities like Patras, Xanthi, and Rethymno host massive parades with giant, colourful floats, loud music and thousands of dancing people.
🪁 Clean Monday & Kites: The day after Carnival ends is called Clean Monday. Families go on picnics and the sky gets completely covered with hundreds of colorful, flying kites.
